A letter from Wendy
I
knew nothing . . . about piano, that is . . . until by chance I was
"babysitting" a piano for a few months and decided on a whim to try to learn
to play. It was luck that I got Steve's number and started taking lessons
from him. And I was soon hooked. When I had to return the piano to its
owner, I bought my own and have been taking lesson from Steve since. I don't
think I could take lessons from anyone else.
My lessons started with the basics of basics: finding
middle C and
mastering "Itsy Bitsy Spider." I have since progressed to many types and
styles of music: Classical, Jazz, Blues, Popular, and New Age. Steve has
encouraged and help me with composing, has brought my singing voice "out of
the shower" and into his studio . . . and I have even discovered that I can
sing AND play at the same time! I have also participated in the student
ensembles that Steve offers, never imaging that I could actually play with
another piano player, conga player, guitar and bass player.
Steve understands how I learn and finds ways to get a point across when I am
having trouble figuring out how to play a piece, write out a composition I
am working on, or learning theory. And it is all done in a fun and relaxing
atmosphere. Included in this fun atmosphere of learning are improv
sessions, when I can set aside the written music and just jam with
Steve.
It is not only fun, but an incredible confidence builder and means to get
comfortable with specific key, learn various rhythms, and suss out a melody
or bass line, while using some nifty keyboard sounds!
I often say that Steve "oozes" music. If you hear him play, you will know
what I mean. His enthusiasm and love of music is obvious and contagious. His
patience and humor are a gift. He is a special kind of teacher, a wonderful,
caring person and an incredibly talented, multi-instrument-playing musician.
If you want to learn to play, call him .. . you'll soon be hooked, too.
